Beyond the Sitcom: The Colbert Report
Show looks to end 'Daily' domination

The Daily Show" has won the Emmy for variety, music or comedy series almost as long as President Bush has been leader of the free (and basic cable) world. But even with no term limits for award winners in place, a new leader is poised to take charge.

Surging toward the top of the zeitgeist, Comedy Central bunkmate "The Colbert Report" is poised to end the five-year "Daily Show" run of Emmy glory.

"I do think that, in terms of buzz and critical momentum, 'Colbert' is hotter this year than 'TDS,'" says Time television critic James Poniewozik, citing host Stephen Colbert's pithy but publicized plan to run for the presidency as one of several reasons. "Colbert has really made his show into something like a movement over the past year or two, not just a show but a kind of two-way participatory media stunt involving his audience."

At the same time, Poniewozik isn't sure that "Daily Show" and host Jon Stewart are kudo-kaput.

"If I were betting, I'd still bet on 'TDS,' inertia being what it is at the Emmys," Poniewozik says. "I wonder if the writers get more credit for 'TDS,' whereas Colbert (himself) gets more credit, right or wrong, for 'Colbert.' "

Either way, shed no tears for Stewart. As executive producer of "Colbert," he'd take home a statuette if either that or "Daily" hold off the latenight talkshows and other contenders.
