Broadway box office holding steady
Tonys continue to fuel sales
|
Fueled by its recent spate of Tony noms, tuner "In the Heights" ($733,183) hit a new altitude, logging the highest jump of the week (up just over $82,000) and making its debut appearance in the top ten.
"The Little Mermaid" ($1,006,640) climbed by almost as much as "Heights" did, while "The Phantom of the Opera" ($850,554) experienced a bump of $75,855 and "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" ($722,182) rose roughly $60,000.
The majority of gains, however, were of the $50,000-or-less variety. Dips of the week also were largely unremarkable, with "Spring Awakening" ($474,917) registering the steepest slide in the immediate wake of a frame boosted by aud turnout for the final perfs of original lead thesps Jonathan Groff and Lea Michele.
Sales at the starry revival of "The Country Girl" ($424,756) slowed by a bit more than $50,000.
Two contenders for the new musical Tony, "Cry-Baby" ($331,709) and "Xanadu" ($218,887), fell slightly, although competish "Passing Strange" ($280,591) rose somewhat -- as did new play candidates "August: Osage County" ($459,492) and "The 39 Steps" ($261,218).a
Total Broadway cume stepped up by about $435,000 to $20.8 million for 35 shows reporting (or $21.7 million including "Young Frankenstein" estimates, which remained stable at $962,000).
Week's tally is about on par with the ones logged during the same frames in the last couple of years. If tradition holds, look for a general dip to register in the post-Memorial Day sesh.
