The fest is also introducing an award aimed at international films with a E50,000 ($78,000) prize donated by camera makers Arri and Carl Zeiss.
The event's retrospective will be dedicated to the low-budget works of Munich's enfant terrible filmmaker Herbert Achternbusch, who is 70 this year.
Around 200 films will screen in the fest's sections -- New German Cinema, New German TV Movies, American Independents, Cinema Francais and Kinderfilmfest plus sidebars Visionas Latinas and The Year of the Dragon -- Young Cinema From China.
The theme for the free, open-air program is "Viva Las Vegas," with pics that feature the city such as "Mars Attacks!" and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas."
Fest runs June 20-28.
